It’s been about a year now since I jumped on board the whole Tower Defense genre, thanks to Desktop Tower Defense. And since there, there have been about a million and one clones, variations, and hybrid games that have come out iterating on the gameplay formula. And every time I think I had enough, whether playing Plants vs Zombies or Locke’s Quest on the DS, I find a new twist that is just interesting enough to pull me back in again.

And The Creeps! is one game that did it again. Developed by Super Squawk Software, this colorful game has a few new interesting touches which I found to be quite addicting.

First off, many stages have obstacles (ie. tree, gravestones) that you have to destroy to build weapons on top of that space. That encourages you to constantly make a choice between taking out the endless wave of enemies or establishing a prime spot for attacking. Second, you have some wicked mega weapons as well, which can only be used in limited fashion, such as the whirlwind, or oil slick, or giant spider. They come in handy when those boss characters come rampaging in, and require a good amount of damage to take down. Third, and my favorite, is a new gameplay mode called Door Buster. Since the whole premise of the game is to stop these creepy crawler monster from reaching your bed, a clever take on the classic monsters under your bed childhood fears, this particular mode requires you to destroy the “door” where the monsters come front. When you start, the map is filled with all sorts of obstacles, and your job is to figure out what to destroy and what weapons to build that allows you to reach the door fast enough before the enemies become too tough to defeat.

My only complaint with the game is that after I beat everything, I wished there was more!  You’ll get your money’s worth, for sure, so I’m hoping to see a sequel with some more clever twists on the gameplay concept. I love the whole theme, colorful presentation, and gameplay elements in The Creeps!
